Marijuana is medicine. It is high time we legalized marijuana.
This is a sticky issue.
It is a fact that Marijuana saves lives. In Colorado after legalization, opioid deaths were reduced 6.5%, violent crime was reduced, and critical state revenue was created after legalization. I don’t need to remind the House of the critical need for revenue in our state.
The buzz is that traffic death rate statistics are invalid yet there is a clear lack of disambiguation of variables in traffic reports reported as cannabis fatalities yet Alcohol was not separated as a variable. Officials like AG and County Prosecutor should be precise and scientific when presenting potentially statistically biased arguments to the Legislature if they are to be taken seriously. They were not.
This is about more than tax revenue arguments. We need to recognize that far too many people have been sent to jail for simple marijuana possession, at enormous cost to our society, in lost wages, family disruption, incarceration costs and loss of jobs and income tax revenue. Decriminalization was just gutted in the State Senate yet just today Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris said "nobody should have to go to jail for smoking weed". The days of 1936 reefer madness propaganda are over in most of the country. Continued 1920’s style Prohibition in Hawai’i will only continue to funnel money to the black market.Delete: instead of much needed legal revenue to State General funds when the program is run and taxed appropriately.
For too long the legislature has been bogged down in the weed.
We have an obligation to vote as a majority of our population requests and let’s be clear- a vast majority of voters say Legalize it.
Don’t let adult’s rights go up in smoke. This is an opportunity not to be wasted. It is high time we legalized marijuana.
