Insurance rate increases

The following is what I have been doing about the recent enormous insurance increases:

For those of you who did not receive my newsletter, here is an excerpt from Newsletter 24-5:

The ‘Post Fire Insurance Problem’ and what I am doing:

This is a long section, but important and you deserve the real facts!

In most condominiums in Kīhei including where I raised my 4 children, and many statewide, we are seeing an immediate 800% increase in wooden frame construction insurance rates.  Housing is already too expensive, yet some people are receiving demand letters of up to $5000 and many are seeing a 60% HOA fee increase. If not fixed this will likely translate into at least a 15% increase in housing costs. Some neighbors may lose their homes other will have to move.  I am extremely concerned.  How is this even possible?

This is occurring because some insurance ‘admitted carriers’ have ‘non-renewed’ for wood frame structures, even brand new ones.  Anticipating this insurance rate issue might occur here as it has in California, Florida  and elsewhere, I submitted an insurance regulation bill in January of 2024: HB2189 would have established ratemaking regulations for insurers who base rates on wildfire risk.  My protective bill was unfortunately not heard in committee.

I have taken numerous other steps: I have spoken with insurance brokers to get facts. I met twice with Insurance Commissioner ITO (DCCA) who oversees the Hawaii insurance industry, 3 times with the Speaker of the House and twice with our Governor to discuss this problem.  In April Commissioner Ito said House bill 2686 should help fix this, and as a backstop, he could activate the hurricane relief fund and raise the $400,000 cap on HPIA (Hawaii Property Insurance Association) to $750,000 and allow them to do commercial insurance as well.

It sounded like I was making progress but HB2686 died in Conference hearings with the Senate :-( also many housing complexes exceed $100 Million in value. I have continued conversations with our Senator and my House colleagues, but for 2024 that particular bill is dead. (update: See note below on Emergency Proclamation!)

Not willing to quit, I went to the Speaker of the House about this issue again. He said he thought the market would stabilize.  I don’t feel we can wait for that ‘maybe’ given the seriousness of the issue.  I had more meetings with the Insurance Commissioner the Speaker of the House and our Senator.

Then I elevated the issue further: I met with our Governor Josh Green who is taking this very seriously and agreed with me that a special session of the legislature this summer would likely be the way to fix this.  I don’t think we can wait until 2025. Do you?

Minutes after Gov and I met, to his credit he publicly brought up this issue in a TV press conference on 5/2, (Thank you Josh!) and then my Chief of Staff Dr. Joe Ritter (my Chief of Getting Sh*t Done) met one on one with Governor Green that same evening: Dr. Joe briefly presented some legal solutions used in other states as the two discussed my suggestion of a special emergency legislative session this summer to fix this serious problem.  Reviving legislation I submitted in January might be one step in fixing this. Just two days ago I met again with our Governor who is taking this seriously and affirmed our previous discussion.  I immediately also met again with the Speaker of the House.  It is my hope that the Senate President and Speaker will agree to call a ‘special emergency legislative session.’ My colleagues will blame me for that, OK by me!  A special session is by no means certain, but I am pushing for it and will ask for your help in that. (UPDATE: no emergency session called as of August)

I refuse to stand by and just do nothing while insurance carriers charge us exorbitant rates!

You deserve honest facts: These unprecedented rate hikes are already making high housing costs even higher statewide and may jeopardize ownership for some.  The estimate in my district is  a 15% increase in costs.  My staff and I are actively working to gather information and find solutions. Please email me any documents you receive regarding rate hikes for your property.

This is a tough issue.  I wish I had a full solution to report.  For right now this is where we are.

My team and I are working diligently on this issue.  I promise to stay vigilant and fight for you.

UPDATE: August 2024

I have continued to be very vocal abnout this at the Capitol.  Some results:

  • I spoke with the Governor and No emergency session has been scheduled -- yet.
  • An Insurance Commission 'task force' was formed including Insurance Commisioner Ito. CONTACT
  • After initial work, the recommendation from the Joint Executive and Legislative Task Force is here.
  • Commission recommends Governor emergency Proclamation.
  • An executed copy of the Emergency Proclamation can be found here.

So ... I keep pushing.  The Emergency Procalmation is a good start.

UPDATE: August 2025

Emergency Proclamation 7/9/25 LINK

I am proud to have helped get this to this point-We are making progress.  We need much more progress.

I promise to continue pushing this.  I work for YOU! (Not insurance lobbyists!)

This is a prime example of why I will never accept a penny from any corporation or lobbyist.

Issues

Affordable Housing:

  • Completed acquisition of ~180 Kīhei affordable workforce housing units (obtained $45M to do this)
  • Passed phase1 legislation for a new Maui Veteran’s home
  • Housed 99% of 7796 displaced Lahaina families in long term housing
  • Allocated $450 Million to rebuild Lahaina with a $5 Billion federal match
  • Funded ‘Hula Mae Mortgage Loan Program’ for 1st time home buyers
  • Increased funding for homeless: 7 of 21 new kauhale now operational
  • Broke ground on 117 new units of Kīhei affordable Senior housing! There are multiple components I will address including a serious Housing Crisis (see page at this link):
  • What I am proposing here is 20x the size of what the county council members have proposed, but without affecting your taxes:
    • I’ll support executive action to build truly affordable housing on free state land that is not in environmentally or culturally sensitive areas.

I am #ProChoice: Click to see what I have done to protect your rights!

Extra funding obtained for Kīhei/South Maui! $63,470,000 extra!

  • $45,000,000 Affordable Housing
  • $4,000,000 Infrastructure for new housing
  • $6,950,000 Flood and Fire Mitigation
  • $7,520,000 Education/schools local supplement
  • $350,000 Support for disabled

Cost of living:

  • We passed the biggest tax break in Hawai’i history!  Whether you are a (D) or (R), rich or poor, this great news!
  • This will put money back in your pocket: You’ll pay less in taxes and take home more pay (please spend it at local small businesses).
  • No GETax on Medicaid and Tricare services

Protecting civil rights:

  • Reproductive freedom: I was a primary introducer of ACT2 to protect any person’s right to choose
  • Act 2 also protects out of state providers and patients from interstate prosecution
  • Passed a Constitutional Amendment ballot measure to preserve same sex marriage (remember to vote YES on 1)
  • I’ve been standing up for worker’s rights and fighting for our union members (most recently nurses).

What do I stand for?  I stand for Change.

#Working for the People- more than a catchphrase, a way of life.

I am running for State House Representative Re-election because the people of South Maui deserve a new Representative who is working for them, not for corporations and lobbyists.

My priority is to advocate for the people of Maui and their children and to ensure their needs are put first.

Issues of concern in my district (South Maui) affect all of Hawai'i and include

  • Standing up against the influence of corporate and lobbyist money in our government

  • The effects of pollution and toxins on Maui’s workers, economy, environment, and our health

  • Improving education

  • Ensuring quality accessible healthcare to the people of Maui

  • Supporting our local workers and unions

I will never accept money from Corporations or Lobbyists.

The people of South Maui deserve a new Representative who works only for them, not for corporations and lobbyists.

Specifics: Social and environmental Justice requires that we fix many issues.

Here are some issues I intend to work on initially:

  • The Cost of living is exploding- so what have I done?

    • We passed the biggest tax break in Hawai’i history!  Whether you are a (D) or (R), rich or poor, this great news!
    • This will put money back in your pocket: You’ll pay less in taxes and take home more pay (please spend it at local small businesses).
    • No GETax on Medicaid and Tricare services

A Living Wage is needed: a minimum wage is not sufficient. People should be able to afford their basic needs on 40 hours a week: I support more than just higher wages over a 6 year period as passed in this year's House bill 2510. We must add to that good start, a LIVING wage geared to the cost of living index.

  • Our Healthcare & safety net are severely lacking

AND we must codify ROE in Hawai’i to protect women's health care

Our Healthcare & safety net are lacking:

Ensuring quality accessible healthcare to the people of Maui is critical.

  • This includes immediately codifying ROE, a reaffirmation of a women's right to choose.  SEE LINK
  •  I honored my promise and supported funding much needed new training and staffing initiatives for positions from CNAs to RTs to Doctors!
  • Next step: This should free community college to increase our healthcare workforce. (30 states have free community college. It is time for us!)
  • We must allow people to keep a safety net while still being on Quest.
  • Marijuana is medicine for many. I will work to legalize it.

The effects of pollution on our Environment are staggering

This includes both greenhouse gas emissions and water pollution

We must shift away from burning fuels to make energy and heavily invest in Solar Power (link).

Water: We need to divert federal infrastructure funds to Maui to fix injection wells.

  • To diversify and stabilize our economy We must improve our education system

To diversify we must invest in providing vocational training and also free college education for anyone who gets educated here then chooses to remain in Hawai’i working in that field for a 4 year minimum following graduation. This will increase opportunities to develop other industries and have people go into other areas besides tourism as well as fill current shortages including teaching, healthcare and other fields.

30 states have free community college.  It is time to do that and even more for our people. Additionally I support statewide micro-credentialing, badging, and licensing efforts for apprenticeships.   In Silicon valley credentialing and certification is the new wave. It can help in Hawai’i as well.

Industry development should include farming hemp and recreational marijuana

  • Campaign Finance Reform is imperative.

  • Corporate influence and corruption has hijacked our system!

This is why I will Never take a penny from any corporation or lobbyist

  • We need legislation to help disabled people

I'll support and sponsor legislation for more disabled parking and accessibility for disabled and Kupuna

Reduce Corruption:

Campaign Finance Reform is imperative. Transparency is not important, it is CRITICAL!

I will put live cameras in my office.

No more backroom deals! No more Sunshine law violations.

I’ll introduce anti-corruption bills: We need criminal laws to make it a crime to lie to the people. We must address fraud and corruption AND systemic abuse by corporate politicians and corporate goons that run for office so I will introduce bills to shore up campaign spending commission efforts to deter corruption as 5 commission employees is not enough to fix a corrupt system. We need laws to ensure prosecution of campaign spending violations.

Overal Philosophy:

Environment

Hawai'i's resources are limited and must be prioritized over business profits. Without our pristine environment, all sectors of industry in Hawai'i will fail. This is not an anti-business approach; it is a responsible business approach. This means, no open air testing of new life forms until safety can be thoroughly assessed, strict guidelines for pesticide/fertilizer use, careful mitigation of dust drift and water runoff, and comprehensive air quality monitoring along with true transparency.

To accomplish this, there must be more accountability at the state level to uphold current regulations as well as the implementation of new, more comprehensive regulations. Additionally, more resources must be allocated at the county level to ensure our natural assets are protected. I believe the county’s and state offices must work closely together to ensure irreparable harm to fragile ecosystems does not occur and will actively work to ensure that modern, comprehensive metrics are implemented to serve that goal.

Protecting our environment: I will always support the constitution of the State of Hawaii article XI-Conservation, control and development of resources: “Section 1. For the benefit of present and future generations… All public natural resources are held in trust by the State for the benefit of the people.”

I advocated for green harvesting instead of  burning due to serious health effects on our community. I will fight granting East Maui Water permits and support our local farmers. I have continued to advocate for fixing our local wastewater treatment issues (ocean contamination). I supported a polystyrene ban. Our family has stepped up to prevent environmental abuses.

Unlike my opponent I stand for transparency: I support legislative reform including full disclosure of restricted use pesticides, no open air GMO testing, and support GM food labeling – you have a right to know what you are eating breathing or drinking.

Education

Where is the promised DOE Kihei High School?  For 30 years we have needed a high school.  And how will our children safely access the school?

As a parent of four children in Maui’s public school system, education is particularly important to me personally. Our teachers are entrusted with our greatest assets (our youth) and need to be shown that they are valued and appreciated. Our teachers deserve more support for the challenging task of educating the diverse group of students who make up the public school system. Especially now.

I support working directly with our public school teachers to give them more control over their curriculum, and I support higher wages and bonuses.  I support all teaching unions from DOE (HSTA) through University level (HGEA, UHPA).  I also feel that higher goals could be attained with more autonomy at the local level by having school boards with direct input and involvement from parents.  I support paid family leave Paid family leave (SB2990).

I support charter school facilities funding (HB2508). In my district in Kihei we have been waiting for a promised high school for over 30 years, so while we are waiting lets fund the existing charter school adequately.

I will unequivocally support future legislation requiring a public school teacher on Board of Education. That is a no brainer- The teachers MUST have a voice.

We must provide a new stream of funding for SPED teachers to make up for what the federal government has defunded. They (like all teachers) have a tough and important job, we must support them in every way possible. No excuses.

I believe in local school boards and local control therefore I support local schools making their own decisions on bills that allow local control of funding and resources; increasing from 70 to 90 percent. Let teachers decide, they know what they need!

I agree with Former HSTA President Corey Rosenlee: I oppose arming teachers!

It is an embarrassment to the DOE that teachers must buy supplies. I strongly support a teacher tax credit for supplies. I’ll go further, we need to make sure that DOE actually provides what teachers and students need so that underpaid teachers don’t have to subsidize out of their own pockets. I’ll vigorously support new legislation for that.

In addition to raising teacher salaries and supporting legislation for funding described in my other answers, I feel compelled here to discuss protecting our unions.

I will always stand up for our teachers and our children!

Higher Education:
I’m in favor of more autonomy for UHMC and UH branches located here on Maui. It’s important that greater higher education opportunities be provided here, within Maui County. UHMC has grown significantly during the past few years, but if we hope to continue to excel, more Maui County money needs to stay within Maui County. UH is a microcosm of this problem at state level.  More TAT taxes also need to stay on Maui.  Let's support education here on Maui so our families can afford to get the best education possible.

Labor

Worker’s rights:
Living wage — I support living wage over a minimum wage measure for the people of Hawai’i. The cost of living is particularly high here in Hawaii. Nearly 11% of Hawaii’s residents live below the Federal Poverty level! For Hawaii, that’s an annual gross income of less than $27,090 for a family of four. Wages do not reflect our unique geographical challenges including soaring housing costs due to displacement by investors and other sources, as well as extraordinary energy consumption costs.

It is cheaper to pay people a decent wage than to deal with the resulting societal issues when people can't make a living. Society must pay a living wage. Anything less is a disservice to our people at all levels.

Worker Protection for Hazardous Fields — More stringent protection requirements for workers in hazardous fields must be mandated to protect our labor force. This includes those working with hazardous and toxic chemicals as well as dangerous machinery.

Protecting Workers and Unions

Our Unions provide a critical voice on the job securing worker pay, benefits and conditions of employment.

We now face a grave threat by corporate funded union busters: Workers across the nation have repeatedly come under attack from corporate interests looking to cut wages so they can pocket higher profits. The recent JANUS supreme court case sought to gut public sector unions across the nation including in Hawai'i.  We must not allow this to destroy unions in Hawai’i

The  Janus case in the US supreme court is a clear assault on workers and unions by trying to remove mandated union dues. I will always support our workers and small businesses against corporate abuse, in this case by advocating state legislative protection of unions. I vow to to fight against so called "right to work laws", and further promise to support legislation to protect Hawai’i and its people and unions  from these union busting tactics. This will be a fight, but we must do it for the people of Hawai’i

Unions have been a valuable tool for promoting worker safety, better pay, and equality in the workplace since their inception here in Hawaii during the mid-1800s. The role of labor unions in Hawaii is still just as important now as it was then. As a former business owner, I understand the need to arrive at equitable labor negotiations that benefit both business and employee. When our employees are properly provided for and feel valued and happy, business thrives.

Local Industry

Industry must begin looking forward if it’s to succeed here in Hawaii. The business model must be redefined into a balanced, sustainable approach that creates value in all sectors—economic, human, and environmental. Industry in Hawaii must look towards modernizing practices as an investment in Hawaii’s future and economy, not merely as a burdensome business expense. Ideally, this would be attained by educating businesses on cleaner, more responsible models which inspire a voluntary shift in practices.

Health

Affordable Health Care: For too long health care services have been rising and services decreasing. Many have little coverage, no coverage, or are not paid a living wage and have to carry the entire burden of coverage without support.

My previous opponent has at every step acted to defund the Hawaii health Authority (HAA) against the sage advice of the Hawaii medical association (HMA).  I support single payer health care, I support a comprehensive study then overhaul via funding the HHA, medicare reform, tort reform, simplified uniform billing leading to reduced administrative costs. There is an unreasonable provider shortage including M.D.s, specialists, education of PA’s and more.  We must have mandatory Fair business practices in health insurance including recruitment techniques.

I would advocate for a stroke certified rehab on Maui as we have none.

Maui only has one hospital. As such, there is no local competition or alternative for medical treatment on island. I support upgraded and further improved standards for healthcare at MMMC. I also fully support the construction of an additional hospital on island to better serve our growing population. At the clinic level, I support requiring a smaller patient to support staff ratios in all local clinics.

The people of Maui need access to quality medical care. We must ensure that we can maintain health services for the people of Maui, reduce taxpayer subsidies for our health care safety net, invest new resources to improve our hospitals, increase efficiency, and meet our obligations to our hospital employees.

The wrong thing to do was to sell Maui’s hospitals to mainland corporations with no commitment to the people of Maui. We now have nurses and Doctors quitting due to overworked conditions and contract issues.  This has been exacerbated by COVID.

Year after year, my previous opponent continued to support bad legislation without concern for  thousands of union jobs leaving our healthcare and hospital services in the hands of a mainland corporation.  The HGEA union leader has complained publicly.  Hospital staff including overworked nurses have come to me and personally and expressed their extreme dismay with the current situation over hospital worker issues.  We must stand by them!

You have a right to quality, affordable, accessible healthcare.  In Summary: I will never take money from corporations and lobbyists. I will always fight for the people; and unlike my opponent I support measures to help address Hawaii’s health care and and businesses of Hawaii. I pledge to at every step be transparent and work for the people of Hawai’i. They deserve a Senator that is working for the people, not for corporations and lobbyists. I will support improving care and I will fight to improve hospital services and to protect the jobs of working families.

Unlike my previous opponent

Running for an elected office in which I serve as an advocate for the people of Maui is an honor that I will never take for granted.

I am running for House because the people of South Maui deserve a new Representative who is working for them, not for corporations and lobbyists. The people of Maui deserve a progressive Representative who has made a commitment to be honest and transparent, and who will work only for them not for corporate interests.

I stand for transparency: My previous opponent gutted the restricted use pesticide (RUP) disclosure bill (SB3095). I will always stand up against lobbyists who want to keep toxic poison specifications a secret.

I will not give special breaks to special interest: For years State officials have protected Corporate Biotech, Big Pharma, Healthcare corporations and contributed to over-development while taking money from those entities.

Unlike my prior opponent I would never vote against an ivory ban designed to protect endangered species and defund child powered armies. I care about the environment and will always work to preserve it.  Our local jobs and health depend on it.

Unlike my prior opponent I do not support a privatization bill that would allow for profit prisons in Hawai'i.  I stand firmly against profiting by locking up people! For the record, I will never support privatization of any of Hawai'i's prisons nor will I ever support sending Hawai'i's inmates to United States prisons abroad.

Unlike my oprior pponent I will never take money from corporations or lobbyists: According to my opponent's own June 30th 2014 report to the State of Hawai‘i Campaign Spending Commission, only one contribution of $250 came from her district out a population of more than 50,000 people! Over 96% of her money that year didn’t even come from Maui or its people she has sworn to represent! She has received 3/4 of a million dollars in contributions and funded by biotech, insurance, healthcare, development, banking and other powerful lobbies/industries.

We must ask who gives my prior opponent this money, and examine how this shapes her policies. This is not bashing-These are all fair and important questions people must ask and I am asking them and you should too! The data shows very clearly that it is not the people of Maui who are supporting her.

In Summary

The people of Maui deserve a Representative who has made a commitment to be honest and transparent, and who will work only for them, not for corporations or lobbyists. This is why I, Terez Amato, am running for State House.

Mahalo for taking the time to get to know me. I truly appreciate you and your support.  I am working for you, working for the people, and working for change

Please feel free to reach out to me for any reason.

With Aloha,

Terez Amato

About Terez Amato

Aloha,

I work for you: I am truly honored to be your South Maui (HD11) State Representative.

I grew up on Maui and raised my four children here on Maui.

Maui is my home.  Maui is not for sale.  It does not belong to big corporations.

I stand for change.  I am a real progressive.  I share your values:

I have 3 criteria on which I will make any decision:

  • Will it help people
  • Will it preserve and protect our environment
  • Is it the wish of the people in my community

If an issue can meet these 3 criteria I will vigorously fight for it

I will legislate from the heart using science as my guide.

You deserve a Representative who is #WorkingForThePeople, not for corporations and lobbyists.

I will never take corporate money – because I am not for sale!

Many of Hawai'i's Doctors , Teachers,  Dentists Unions and Medical professionals, endorse and TRUST me (see endorsements page)

to do what is best for our kūpuna and our keiki.

Working for you in an elected office in which I serve as an advocate for the people of Maui is an honor that I will never take for granted.

Maui is not for sale. It does not belong to corporations.

The US Supreme Court has anointed itself as the regulatory agency for women's bodies, guns and our environment:

The Supreme Court is cutting abortion protection, allowing public concealed gun carry laws, violating separation of church and state with school funds, and another EXTREME SCOTUS ruling just stripped away EPA authority for environmental protection, essentially undoing the Clean Air Act.

I will work to codify your protections! See my plan to preserve your rights!

You deserve a Representative who is working for the people, not for the corporations and lobbyists that have hijacked our political system.

As a mother of 4, I will support strengthening gun laws in Hawai’i and I will vote for tougher registration requirements.

I will protect our children and our families.

I will protect women's rights. I will always stand up for the people of Hawai’i, not special interest groups.

Too many corrupt corporate funded pay to play politicians (fear candidates who are #WorkingForThePeople not corporations.

And to my opponent and those old boy politicians I say: Unlike so many who claim to represent people,

I will never take a penny from any corporation or lobbyist, especially not the NRA!

I'm working for the people, I am working for YOU, the people of South Maui!

Our government must always serve the people, not the agenda of the lobbyists.

I will always support Maui's families, workers and small businesses.

Keeping Maui free from toxins and pollution, and protecting the health of our people and our environment will always be one of my top priorities. That is something we can't afford to compromise on, which is another reason why I will never take money from corporations or lobbyists.

I refused corporate and lobbyist money in every election. We don't need corporate control, we need grassroots people power that represents ALL of the people.

We need a campaign finance revolution!

We can create a strong economy with good jobs for everyone, while we keep Maui clean, healthy and prosperous for our families and our children.

The people of Maui need to know for sure that their House Representative works for them, not for corporations.

If you would like to know exactly where I stand on specific issues please CLICK HERE or feel free to contact me!

As your Hawai'i State Representative

I WILL ALWAYS

  • work for the people of Maui, not corporations or lobbyists
  • support Maui’s workers and local businesses.
  • protect our people and environment from toxic pollution and corporate abuses.
  • fight for your right to Health and Prosperity

I Will NEVER:

  • take money from corporations or lobbyists.

Kulia i ka nu'u!

Brief Bio:

Terez Amato grew up in South and Central Maui and is a graduate of St. Anthony Jr./Sr. High School in Wailuku (Class of ’93). As a hardworking, single mother of four, she believes in our basic human rights to clean air, clean water, and locally grown food. Her vision is for a sustainable Maui nui where education, health care, and preserving the rights of all citizens and workers is both progressive and rational.

Working in very successful, small family businesses here on Maui from a young age, she learned the importance of integrity and always doing her best when serving others. Terez Amato’s honest, thoughtful, and responsive approach to issues and considering the good of all—especially the future of our children—defines our future Representative’s positive campaign.

Why am I running?

The simple fact of the matter is that you deserve a House Representative who works for you, not corporations or lobbyists.

That is why I made a solid commitment to never accept corporate or lobbyist donations. The people of Maui will always know that I only work for them. Our environment is truly our economy. My goal is to guarantee and protect our right to clean air, clean water, and clean soil. By doing so, we will preserve our health, our economy will prosper, and our children will inherit a Maui nui worthy of raising a family in. My objective is to assert our uncompromised right to a healthy, prosperous life. To accomplish this, the people of Maui—and the island ecosystem that sustains us—must be put first.

Running for an elected office in which I serve as an advocate for the people of Maui is an honor that I will never take for granted.

I’m running for State Representative of South Maui (HD11) because the people of Maui need a Representative who is willing to be their voice, one who understands their needs, and who works hard and advocates for them everyday.

The life of the land is perpetuated in righteousness. We need new leadership in the legislature who understands this and who has not lost sight of who their constituents are. I will never forget who my neighbors are and the people I work for. I’m only one person, but together with you, we can work to reverse the damage being done to our island home and reclaim our government. I humbly ask that you make a new choice in this election and vote for me on Saturday, August 13th.

Why you should vote for me

I won’t forget who hired me. Serving as your State House Representative is a civic responsibility, an honor, and a privilege that I will not take for granted. As such, my values won’t be compromised by campaign contributions, and I will never take money from corporations or lobbyists. I promise to always be accessible and for my door to always be open. As I’ve said to the thousands of Maui residents whose doors I’ve knocked on, I am applying for the job to work for you.

I won’t ever claim to have all the answers. If I don’t know something or am unsure, I’ll tell you. With you as my employer, I am accountable only to you.

I promise no games, just straight answers; and to help me make informed decisions I will establish a reputable brain trust of knowledgeable professionals and community members across diverse fields to help educate me and keep me in the know. I promise to always do my best—for you.

Really, what you see is what you get with me, and I have a very low tolerance for political games.

I am part of the 99%; and it’s the 99% who I will serve.

Together we must protect our families’ futures, and that depends on the choices we make at the polls August 11th. We must choose wisely: Choose vision, innovation, and new leaders who are working for the people, not corporations— because those are the new leaders who are actually working for you. On August 11th the people of Maui will take back their political system!

Previous community organization involvement:

Sierra Club (Board Member, Treasurer), Maui Farmers Union (member), Surfrider foundation (volunteer), Maui Forest Bird Recovery Project (volunteer),  Leeward Haleakala Watershed Restoration Partnership (volunteer), West Maui Mountains Watershed Partnership (volunteer).
